Our mission and goals

Our mission and goals

We are a patient non-profit organization operating since 2007, which brings together persons who have suffered brain damage (strokes, trauma, brain tumors or other damage), as well as their family members and caregivers.

The main goal is to provide counseling in this area as well as increase the public’s awareness of the wide range of consequences of brain injury and the possibilities of rehabilitation. As part of our counseling service, we help in difficult life situations – by phone, email, but preferably in person. We give practical advice, share valuable experiences and sometimes just listen. We also map services that are available to people after a brain injury.

We also provide group training for memory and other cognitive functions, training for physical functions, speech therapy consultations, psychological consultations, self-help community activities and organize rehabilitation off-sites.

We run a community center for these people – a safe place for everyone. A space for mutual motivation and support. A space where we want to give everyone the feeling that they are not alone.

In addition to service activities, our goal is also to change the legislative environment for brain injury care and to promote changes in laws so that systemic deficiencies are eliminated and appropriate targeted follow-up care is introduced. We see this topic as common with other organizations and we welcome proposals for joint action towards the legislators.

We are a patient organization according to the provisions of § 113f, paragraph 3 of the Act on Health Services.

Our members

Our members

Our members are people who has suffered strokes, head injuries (accidents, falls during sports, etc.) or with consequences after treatment of malignant diseases.

We provide advice and assistance also to members’ families, or their carers, relatives and friends.

The stories of those with brain injuries are an intimate account of our members and friends of what was before and what is now. A reality that is completely different from what they dreamt of years ago. They are stories of great strength and courage to overcome oneself and find a new future despite the many limitations of living with a disability, testimony of the power of love and support from their loved ones and friends, without whom they would not have won their great fight.

Our role

Our role

The current system of long-term care for people after brain damage is fragmented, there is a lack of rehabilitation and aftercare capacity. Rehabilitation started as soon as possible after an accident or injury has a significant impact on long-term results. However, due to the lack of resources, patients end up in psychiatric hospitals or institutions for people with disabilities, facilities are not intended for them and are not able to offer them appropriate and adequate help.

If the family decides to take care of the person in question alone, the support or assistance provided is almost non-existent, and gradually these families are completely exhausted and often break up.

Currently, there is a very limited number of options for specialized and comprehensive rehabilitation in the Czech Republic. Cerebrum reacts to this situation and tries to create a system of follow-up care in the scope and volume that the current allocated subsidies and funds allow.
